After discussing the matter with motivated partners we finalized the theme and date for the World Respecting Childbirth Week  in 2010.

The date will be 16 to 23 May 2010. Please feel free to organize events (reasonably) off-period. As you know, important projects may happily be realized pre- and post-term! The most important thing is to link many events with the campaign and relay them on social networks.

This year's theme will be "BIRTH TRAUMA, BIRTH PLEASURE".

There are many different ways of interpreting this motto and translating it to Roman languages. We feel that it makes it easy to adapt the campaign to priorities perceived by various actors in various countries. "Birth" may evoke women's labour or the birth of a child. Thus it will be possible to focus the campaign on birthing women, parents, families or babies. Needles to say, several meanings may be associated with the words "trauma" and "pleasure".

Please circulate this announcement as widely as possible and translate it to more languages. We look forward to receiving presentations of the theme in various languages as it will be declined in different parts of the world.

Orgasmic birth
USA 2008, 85 min, director Debra Pascali Bonaro

Joyous, sensuous and revolutionary, Orgasmic Birth brings the ultimate challenge to our cultural myths by inviting viewers to see the emotional, spiritual, and physical heights attainable through birth.  Witness the passion as birth is revealed as an integral part of woman’s sexuality and a neglected human right.

Barcelona, 20th. Of April, 2008

Dear Sir or Madam,

I´m writing this letter on behalf of "Plataforma Pro Derechos del Nacimiento" (platform for the rights of birth). This entity, formed by associations and individuals, will be celebrating this year its tenth anniversary.

Our principal target is asking our state health system to take responsibility for the financing of natural birth, regardless of the mother's decision to give birth at a private clinic, a hospital or at home. And above all, that parents will always see their will respected.

We want the recommendations made by the OMS (WHO, World Health Organization) in regard to the rights of the pregnant woman and the baby to be respected in our country, Spain. These recommendations were collected and published by the OMS (WHO) at the International Conference at Fortaleza (Brazil), on the 22nd. and 26th. of April, 1985. Among these rights are the following points:

• The new-born must always be with its mother if they are both in healthy conditions. There should be no medical examination to justify the parting of the mother and the healthy child.
• Breast-feeding should be encouraged as soon as possible, even before the mother and her baby leave the maternity ward.
• Birth giving women should not be lying down on their backs (in the traditional obstetrical position) during childbirth. Women should be encouraged to walk during the dilatation period and be able to choose the position they want to give birth in.
• Childbirth must not be induced for convenience. No birth should be artificially provoked if it is not strictly and medically necessary. No country should have artificial induced births above a 10% rate.

We are aware of the fact that childbirth conditions leave permanent marks in human beings and that the interruption of the natural process of birth interferes in the relationship between mother and child in the short and long run. We would like to spread this information to make it get to as many people as possible.

We intend to spend this year gathering documentation on current investigations in this area.

We would appreciate if you could send us any scientific research in the topic of the effects derived from separating mother and child in the short and long term.

With best regards,

Merche Escursell

The following is a translation of the World Respecting Childbirth Week 2007 statement reflecting the situation of maternity services in France. We urge groups taking part in this event to send us announcements adapted to the contries in which they wish to organise meetings and public interventions. All languages are accepted on this site!

(See announcements in French, Spanish, Czech)

The theme of the next World Respecting Childbirth Week (7-13 May 2007) will be ‘RESPECTING CHILDBIRTH’. This title is inspired by the name of a quality label promoted in France by the CIANE collective in compliance with the Mother-Baby Friendly Childbirth Initiative (MBFI).

The objective of Respecting Childbirth is to acknowledge people and promote places that are respectful of mothers, fathers and their babies. The underlying ideas will be explored in different ways during the event. For the general public it will be an opportunity to reaffirm the need for quality when maternities are undergoing enormous pressure for profitability. This is unacceptable when it comes to childbirth. Modern management based on a pricing indexed on medical interventions does not take into account activities that support continuous care in childbirth, a central issue in the framework of public health and a priority for perinatal policies. Such activities cannot be quantified simply in terms of medical gestures and days spent in hospital. (1) Many local maternities have been under threat of closure because of lack in profitability. In France, there were around 670 maternity units for 774 000 births in early 2006, yielding an average of 1150 births per maternity unit. During the same period, in Germany, there were 1071 maternity units for 690 000 births yielding an average of 644 births per maternity unit (2). Among the side-effects of this disastrous managerial policy is the splitting up of care for pregnant women and their newborn babies — the exact opposite of continuity of care, a right they are entitled to.

Preparing for childbirth and the quality of birth attendance depend dramatically upon the number and qualifications of caregivers. Therefore, consumers of maternity services support the claims of French midwives for:
1) A significant increase in the numerus clausus (quota) at the entry of midwifery schools (which should also lead to a broader variety of maternity care as suggested by the National Health policy in the UK.)
2) A reappraisal of training in midwifery with a real academic cursus leading to a master degree (as demanded by French midwifery students).

The third part of our ‘RESPECTING CHILDBIRTH’ approach will be the respect of parents’ choice of the place of birth. Countries in the north of Europe that display the best perinatal statistics are the same ones supporting free-standing birthing centres and providing a legal framework for midwives to attend homebirths. At present, the French government takes a neutral position — when not hostile — in the face of the increasing popularity of homebirth.

The World Respecting Childbirth Week will be an occasion to reaffirm publicly that human reproduction is a social fact in the first place. The medical point of view should not be the sole reference when 80% of deliveries do not require medical intervention. (Iatrogenic effects of unnecessary medical interventions — see WHO recommendations — should be taken into account in risk evaluation.) WRCW 2007 will therefore be an opportunity to discuss ongoing projects of birthing centres and issues pertaining to homebirth, the safety of which have been confirmed in numerous studies. (See the AFAR compilation of articles on birthing centers and homebirth.)

Please do not hesitate to send proposals, news and links that we will put on this website!

World Respected Childbirth Week 2006

The culture of obstetrical risk and active management of labour led a whole generation of women to loose confidence in their innate ability to birth their baby. A growing number of professional birth attendants (doctors and midwives) are now trying to step out of this "productivist" model. However, only well-informed users have the potential to foster a radical change of medical practice with the support of law-makers.

This year's topic will be "Time for Birth."

It will cover many aspects of the "industrial" obstetrical care: the phobia of post-term pregnancy, induction and "active management" of labour, rupturing membranes, immediate section of the chord etc.

We need to break the spell on this process by talking about time in a positive manner: the essential time it takes (or we ought to claim back) for birthing, both in the physical and in the psychic sense.

We invite parents, birth attendants, health professionals and all concerned citizens to campaign for this topic, ideally during the 15-21 May period. A few ideas:
  1. supplying more links and documents on this topic for the web pages and databases;
  2. commenting on existing resources;
  3. suggesting actions for individual, informal groups, non-profit societies, professional agencies and media in various countries;
  4. broadcasting information on the media;
  5. giving access to information to pregnant women (social welfare office, gatherings of mothers...) and teenagers;
  6. arranging meetings, conferences, interviews with the local press or radio;
  7. organizing all sorts of satellite events;
  8. translating the available material to more languages...

WRCW (SMAR in French) is launched at the initiative of Alliance Francophone pour l'Accouchement Respecté <http://afar.info>.
